The Open and Distance Learning Center of the Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA has organized a physical orientation programme for fresh students admitted into BSc Computer Science programme for the 2024/2025 academic session.
Delivering the keynote address at the event at the Hilltop Auditorium on the 29th of April 2025 .the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Professor Timothy Anos said the fresh students were privileged to join the country’s leading University of Technology.
According to her, “the Federal University of Technology Akure is a specialized university. We take pride in what we do and in who we are. You are privileged to join the community of FUTA’s scholars making waves academically locally and globally.The Centre has put in a lot of measures to ensure that you have a successful academic experience and sojourn through the duration of your career in FUTA. Thus this orientation aims to educate you about the rules and regulations guiding your studentship in the university, alerting you about the effect of inimical vices that can impede the attainment of academic excellence”.
The Vice Chancellor urged the students to take advantage of the conducive atmosphere of teaching, learning and research to accomplish great academic feats that they will be proud of while contributing to the growth and progress of the university.
In his welcome address,the Director, Professor Felix Also said ” the orientation is a strategic activity designed to acquaint Fresh students of Open and Distance Learning Center with the university policies and ethics, give necessary information about life and work in the university, which would guide your studentship within and outside the university campus”.
Addressing the students, the director said ” The programme is structured with a framework to enable you excel. Those who had not been able to access university through UTME now have this novel opportunity. This is an innovation by the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) to give all categories of students access to tertiary education. The programme is flexible, accessible and can reach learners irrespective of geographical location. The university has put all necessary efforts in place to ensure that the centre runs optimally and in line with global best practices in tertiary education “.
Professor Alao also pointed out that the students will graduate with the same category of degree of resident students and can go for the compulsory National Service programme upon graduation adding that the degree is accredited by both the NUC and the Senate of the Federal University of Technology Akure.
Resource persons within the university gave lectures to the students on Academic procedures and Regulations, Proper Use and Maintenance of University Infrastructures, Health Care Services in the University, Personal Security Tips within and outside the university, Character in Learning, Sports and Recreational Activities available in the university and University Library Uses and Ethics.
