In chasing careers in technology and innovation, classroom knowledge is only part of the journey. The real test often comes when you are asked to apply what they know to solve problems.
That was exactly the challenge students from across Nigeria faced at the 2026 University Duel and Smart Challenge competitions.
When the dust settled, students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, emerged as the biggest winners.
The students made history by becoming the first institution to win both competitions in the same year, taking home a combined ₦4 million in prize money and scholarships.
While the winners of the University Duel received ₦3 million, the Smart Challenge champions were awarded ₦1 million.
Sponsored by MTN Nigeria and organised by the STEM Africa Initiative, the competitions brought together students from universities across the country to test their knowledge and problem-solving abilities.
According to the founder of the STEM Africa Initiative, Oladapo Ojo, the contests were designed to promote excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education while preparing students for the realities of the digital economy.
A total of 62 universities and 186 students participated in this year’s edition.
Participants were assessed in Applied Mathematics, Data Analysis, General Knowledge and Verbal Reasoning, combining academic performance with practical skills needed in today’s workforce.
“Engaging 62 universities and 186 students, the competitions test Applied Mathematics, Data Analysis, General Knowledge and Verbal Reasoning, bridging theoretical excellence with the digital skills needed for national development,” Ojo said.
He added that the initiative is helping to build the talent pipeline required for Nigeria’s digital transformation.
“This investment underscores MTN’s role in fostering a talent pipeline essential for Nigeria’s digital economy, as OAU made history by sweeping both competitions under the sponsor’s support,” he said.
Beyond the prize money, the victory highlights a growing conversation around the importance of STEM education in Nigeria.
As industries increasingly rely on technology, data and innovation, students with strong analytical and problem-solving skills are likely to play a key role in shaping the future of work.
Speaking during the prize presentation ceremony on the OAU campus, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. John Odedire, described the achievement as a landmark moment for the university.
“What we are celebrating today is a double win. This is the first time that an institution has won both the University Duel and the Smart Challenge competitions in a sweep,” he said.
He recalled that OAU finished third in the maiden edition of the University Duel competition in 2025 before returning a year later to claim both titles.
The organisers said the competitions will continue to identify and reward talented students while encouraging STEM-driven solutions to national development challenges.
