Students of the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, could soon benefit from improved learning and residential facilities as several major infrastructure projects take shape across the campus.
The projects include new student hostels, a Senate Building, a Centre for Railway Signal and Communication, workshops, classroom blocks, faculty buildings and a School of General Studies.
The development came into focus after the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Wahab Akanni Owokoniran, inspected ongoing construction and renovation works at the university.
The visit, conducted on August 24, 2026, was aimed at assessing the progress of the projects and ensuring that contractors comply with approved specifications and quality standards.
According to Owokoniran, the projects were secured to address critical infrastructure needs in the relatively new institution and provide facilities that will serve students and staff for many years.
“We have secured so many projects for the University, including the Senate Building, Centre for Railway Signal and Communication, hostel accommodation for our students, renovation of the Great Green Wall building and its renaming as Centre of Transpo-Entrepreneurship,” he said.
Other projects include the construction of workshops, classroom blocks, faculty buildings and a School of General Studies.
The council chairman explained that the Governing Council was interested not only in seeing the projects completed but also in ensuring that they meet the standards outlined in their contracts.
“This inspection is to see for ourselves the development made so far in the execution of these projects, as well as ensure quality, especially as the University is one of the newly established universities with critical needs for utilisation by many generations to come,” he said.
Before touring the project sites, Owokoniran met with members of the university management, stressing the importance of maintaining regular engagement to better understand the institution’s needs.
“I want to assure you that I will, from time to time, be interacting with you with the aim of getting first-hand information on the needs of the University,” he said.
During the inspection, the Director of Physical Planning and Municipal Services, Architect Usman Mukhtar Wali, briefed the council chairman and university management on the status of the various projects and their stages of execution.
The visit also provided an opportunity for direct engagement with contractors and consultants handling the projects.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, described the visit as a demonstration of the council chairman’s commitment to the institution’s development.
“This, no doubt, showed the importance the Chairman attached to the University and its development,” Katsayal said.
As the projects progress, students and staff will be looking forward to facilities that can support teaching, learning, research and accommodation needs, while helping the university strengthen its position as a specialised institution for transportation education in Nigeria.
