In a major step towards expanding access to higher education, the Kaduna State Government has officially transferred 270 hectares of land to the Federal Government for the establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia.
Governor Uba Sani, during the handover ceremony, presented the Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) to the Federal Ministry of Education. He assured that the C-of-O would be fully processed within seven days, ensuring a swift commencement of development.
Federal Backing and Academic Plans
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, expressed excitement over the university’s establishment, emphasizing that academic activities are set to begin in September 2025. He confirmed that funding for the university has already been included in the 2024–2025 budget, ensuring smooth implementation.
The new institution will specialize in applied sciences, offering courses in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, and environmental studies. Dr. Alausa highlighted that the university aligns with the National Educational Sector Renewal Initiative, which prioritizes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.
Government Commitment to Education
Governor Sani described the university as a transformative project for Kaduna State, particularly in fostering science and technology education. He acknowledged the critical role of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, and Bishop Matthew Kukah, who collaborated to bring the initiative to fruition.
He also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its commitment to education, reflected in record-high budget allocations. Governor Sani emphasized that Kaduna State has made significant strides in education, reducing the number of out-of-school children from 580,000 to 250,000 since his tenure began.
Call for Investment in Education
The Governor stressed the need for continuous collaboration between federal and state governments, particularly in teacher training and infrastructure development. He reiterated that establishing universities alone is not enough—investment in qualified lecturers and improved facilities is essential to achieving quality education.
Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, also lauded Governor Sani’s dedication to the project. Senator Sunday Marshall Katung further expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved, describing the successful land transfer as a historic milestone for Kaduna.
With the land transfer now finalized, attention shifts to the university’s preparations to welcome its first students in September 2025.
