Babcock University has welcomed a new cohort of postgraduate students with a call to embrace academic discipline, integrity and focus as they begin their programmes at the institution.
The message was delivered during the orientation programme organised by the university’s College of Postgraduate Studies to provide new students with important information for a smooth registration and successful academic journey.
The Provost of the College, Professor Yacob Haliso, accompanied by his deputies, Professor Emmanuel Ajike and Dr Sunday Audu, urged the students to prepare for intensive academic work throughout the semester.
Professor Haliso described Babcock University as a premier private university where transparency and academic equality are highly valued.
He said students should expect intensive classes from the beginning of the semester until the Christmas break, while assuring them of a supportive and peaceful academic environment.
The Provost also emphasised the university’s commitment to treating students equally regardless of their religious or cultural backgrounds.
He welcomed the international students and assured them that the college would create opportunities for interaction with them.
The orientation also provided students with an understanding of the rules governing postgraduate studies at the university.
The College Secretary, Dr Muyiwa Ajayi, explained that postgraduate students are required to register every semester and pay their fees on a semester basis.
He stressed the importance of attendance, noting that students are expected to be seated at least 10 minutes before lectures and must achieve at least 75 per cent attendance to qualify to sit for examinations.
The programme also reflected Babcock University’s faith-based identity, with the University Pastor, Dr Opeyemi Oladosu, praying for the new students and encouraging them to seek divine guidance throughout their academic journey.
He referenced passages including Proverbs 3:5-6, James 1:5, Isaiah 41:16, Philippians 4:19 and Psalm 121:7-8, urging the students to hold on to the promises contained in the scriptures.
Postgraduate coordinators also reassured the new students that they had a supportive environment in which to learn and develop.
Dr Olufunso Akinboye of the Agriculture Department and Dr Charles Ogboi of the Finance Department assured the students that they were in good hands.
With the orientation completed, the new postgraduate students begin their academic programmes with clear expectations around attendance, discipline, integrity and commitment to their studies.
