Breaking: FG, ASUU to Unveil Signed Agreement to Strengthen University System

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are set to formally unveil a landmark signed agreement aimed at strengthening industrial harmony and improving the quality of teaching and learning across Nigeria’s university system.

The official unveiling ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at the Conference Hall of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Maitama, Abuja.

The event will be presided over by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad. The agreement is expected to mark a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to stabilise the higher education sector and enhance its global competitiveness.

According to the Ministry of Education, the agreement focuses on fostering constructive engagement between government and academic unions, resolving long-standing industrial issues through dialogue, and creating a more conducive academic environment for students and staff.

Officials say the move is expected to enhance industrial peace in Nigerian universities, rebuild confidence among stakeholders, and support sustainable development within the education sector.

The development also aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which recognises education as a key driver of national development, human capital growth, and socio-economic transformation.

The ceremony will bring together senior government officials, ASUU representatives, heads of tertiary institutions, development partners, and members of the media, reflecting a broad-based commitment to advancing Nigeria’s education system.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining reforms that will strengthen the university system and ensure the delivery of quality, accessible, and globally relevant education.
