The Honourable Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Bright Msaka, SC, has commended the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) for its sustained efforts to promote quality assurance in the higher education sector.
The Minister gave the commendation on Tuesday in Lilongwe during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed NCHE Council.
He noted that the Ministry, working through NCHE, is effectively advancing a transformative higher education agenda aimed at producing graduates who are competitive both locally and internationally. According to him, academic programmes being offered by higher education institutions remain relevant and aligned with the government’s national development priorities.
Earlier, the newly appointed NCHE Council Chairperson, Professor John Saka, congratulated Hon. Msaka on his reappointment as Minister of Education, Science and Technology. He briefed the Minister on key issues affecting the Council, particularly the implementation of regulatory frameworks that previous Councils had agreed should be enacted into law to guide NCHE’s operations.
Professor Saka explained that the frameworks were not enacted due to challenges arising from staff turnover in the institutions responsible for providing technical and administrative support.
In response, the Minister assured the Council that the staffing challenges would be addressed. He further pledged that the proposed regulations would be advanced for presentation to Parliament, where lawmakers would deliberate on them with a view to passing them into law.
