The Federal Government has ordered the temporary closure of 41 unity schools as kidnappings of students continue to rise across the country.
The directive was issued in a circular signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Binta Abdulkadir, who said the move became necessary to prevent further attacks on students and school communities.
According to the circular, the Minister of Education approved the immediate shutdown of the affected schools, directing principals to comply without delay.
This decision comes at a worrying time for parents and students nationwide. Only recently, terrorists kidnapped students from St. Mary’s School in Papiri, Agwara LGA of Niger State. Just days earlier, 25 schoolgirls were abducted in Maga, Kebbi State.
Kwara State also shut down more than 50 schools on Thursday after bandits attacked communities around them.
The wave of attacks has heightened fear among families and disrupted learning across several states. President Bola Tinubu has cancelled planned trips to South Africa and Angola to focus on the worsening security situation and coordinate the government’s response.
