JACKSON, Tennessee — Lane College has announced the formal installation of Dr. Donald W. Comer as its 11th president, marking a new chapter in the leadership of the 144-year-old Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
Dr. Comer, a Jackson native and former Fortune 500 executive with more than 35 years of corporate leadership experience, will be officially installed on August 21, 2026, during a presidential investiture ceremony at Graves Auditorium. The event forms part of a multi-day celebration themed “A Moment In Time. A Legacy In Motion.”
The Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Comer as president after he served as interim president, citing his steady leadership, institutional stability and commitment to advancing the college’s mission. Rather than conducting a nationwide search, the board opted to confirm his appointment based on his performance and long-standing support for HBCUs, including board service at LeMoyne-Owen College and Stillman College.
The investiture celebration will feature a leadership speaker series, a community service day, the official installation ceremony and a presidential scholarship gala. The gala, hosted by actor Lamman Rucker and featuring Grammy Award-winning singer Chrisette Michele, will raise funds for student scholarships.
Founded in 1882 by the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, Lane College said the new administration will continue its focus on academic excellence, leadership development and student success.
Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Dr. Comer said leadership should extend beyond individual tenures.
> “Stewardship is not simply about leading people through a moment; it is about building a culture that outlives the moment. We are making decisions that honour our history, respond to this moment and position the College for a future defined by excellence, innovation and enduring impact.”
The college also announced that it has earned designation as an All-Steinway School, joining a select group of institutions worldwide recognised for excellence in music education. College officials described the achievement as part of broader efforts to strengthen academic quality and prepare students for global opportunities.
Lane College said Dr. Comer’s installation reaffirms the vital role of HBCUs in expanding educational opportunities, developing ethical leaders and preserving a legacy of service rooted in character, scholarship and community engagement.
