Nigeria has recorded its strongest showing yet in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, with 29 universities featuring in the 2027 edition of the global ranking.
The latest rankings place Nigeria ahead of every other country in Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of the number of ranked institutions. The figure represents an increase from the 24 Nigerian universities that appeared in the 2026 rankings.
For students, researchers and university administrators, global rankings provide one way of measuring how institutions perform in areas such as teaching, research, international outlook and industry engagement.
While no Nigerian university has yet entered the global top 800, several institutions improved their positions this year, while five universities appeared in the rankings for the first time.

What Stands Out?
One notable trend in the 2027 rankings is the strong presence of federal universities. According to data released by the Federal Ministry of Education, five of Nigeria’s seven universities ranked within the global top 1,200 are federal institutions.
The rankings also show improvements by institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University, the University of Ilorin, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Benin.
Another key development is the growing participation of Nigerian universities in the ranking process. Beyond the 29 ranked institutions, 32 additional universities were listed in the THE Reporter category, bringing the total number of participating Nigerian institutions to 61.
For prospective students, the rankings provide another perspective when evaluating universities. However, experts often note that factors such as programme quality, facilities, employability outcomes, affordability and location remain important considerations alongside global ranking positions.
