A 400-level Medicine and Surgery student at Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu, Chibunna Ochor, has won the institution’s Vice-Chancellor for One Day competition for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The announcement was made by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christian Anieke, during the institution’s 17th Foundation Day celebration in Enugu, according to a report published on 22 October 2026.
The competition was organised to recognise academic excellence and give an outstanding student an opportunity to experience university leadership. Ochor emerged as the overall winner after an aptitude test involving eight students who achieved a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 5.0 during the 2025/2026 academic session.
Anieke said all eight students obtained A grades in their courses during the academic session. The university subsequently organised the selection exercise to determine the student who would take part in the leadership initiative.
As the winner, Ochor is expected to occupy the vice-chancellor’s seat for one day and address students, members of the university’s Governing Council and Senate. He is also expected to pay an official visit to the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah.
The vice-chancellor congratulated the successful students and said they would receive prizes and certificates in recognition of their academic achievements.
The university also recognised students who excelled in national debates, public-speaking competitions and other academic contests. Outstanding members of staff were similarly rewarded during the celebration.
Anieke said the institution had established a Directorate of Competitions to promote academic excellence and help students compete favourably with their counterparts in other Nigerian universities.
The initiative provides an opportunity to celebrate exceptional academic performance while exposing students to aspects of institutional administration and decision-making.
Godfrey Okoye University marked its 17th Foundation Day as it reflected on its development since its establishment. Anieke recalled that the idea of founding the university emerged in the final quarter of 2007, while the National Universities Commission conducted its first assessment visit on 10 June 2008.
The Vice-Chancellor for One Day initiative offers an example of how universities can recognise high-performing students and connect academic achievement with leadership development.
