Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone generation, introducing the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone, alongside the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The announcements mark a major change in Apple’s smartphone strategy, particularly with the company entering the foldable-phone market for the first time.
Here are five things you should know.
1. The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone
The biggest announcement is the iPhone Duo.
Unlike conventional iPhones, the Duo folds like a book. When opened, it has a 7.6-inch internal display, Apple’s largest iPhone screen yet. When folded, it uses a 5.4-inch outer display.
Apple says the design is intended to combine the portability of an iPhone with a larger, tablet-like screen for gaming, watching content and multitasking.
The Duo also supports split-screen use, allowing users to work with multiple apps simultaneously.
2. The iPhone 18 Pro is not the same phone as the Duo
Although they were unveiled at the same event, the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro are designed for different users.
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max retain the conventional smartphone design, while the Duo introduces the foldable form factor.
The Pro models focus heavily on photography, performance and professional features. They feature a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, alongside upgraded ultra-wide and telephoto cameras.
The Duo, meanwhile, uses a dual 48MP camera system and offers up to 2x optical-quality zoom.
In other words, if photography is your priority, the iPhone 18 Pro range is likely to be more appealing; if you want a larger screen and foldable design, the Duo is the more radical option.
3. Both the Duo and 18 Pro use Apple’s A20 Pro chip
Performance is another major connection between the two devices.
The iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro models are powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.
Apple says the chip delivers improvements in CPU and GPU performance, while its Neural Engine is designed to handle demanding artificial-intelligence workloads directly on the device.
The Duo also has a custom cooling system designed to help maintain performance during demanding activities such as gaming, multitasking and AI processing.
4. The Duo is significantly more expensive
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model.
It is available with storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
By comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299.
That means buyers are paying a substantial premium for the Duo’s foldable design.
For many consumers, therefore, the decision may come down to whether the larger foldable display is worth the additional cost.
5. There is an important catch: there is no standard iPhone 18 yet
One of the more surprising developments from Apple’s event was what the company didn’t announce.
Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, but did not release a standard iPhone 18 at the event. Reports indicate that the base iPhone 18 could arrive later, potentially in 2027.
Meanwhile, the iPhone Duo will be available for pre-order from October 16, with sales beginning October 23, 2026.
The bottom line
Apple’s latest lineup shows that the company is taking two different approaches to the future of the iPhone.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max represent an evolution of the traditional iPhone, with improvements to cameras, performance and AI.
The iPhone Duo, on the other hand, represents Apple’s biggest design change in years, bringing a foldable screen and tablet-like multitasking to the iPhone.
For users who want a familiar premium iPhone, the 18 Pro range may be the safer choice.
For those looking for something completely different, the Duo is Apple’s most ambitious iPhone yet.
