The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, was on Friday, 17th April 2026, honoured by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) as part of activities marking its 45th anniversary celebration.
The recognition, which highlights individuals who have made significant contributions to national development and youth empowerment, placed Mr. Sawyerr among a distinguished group of eminent Nigerians acknowledged for their impactful service.

Other notable honourees include the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin; the Minister of Agriculture, Senator Abu Kyari; the Minister of Youth Development, Imaan Suleiman; and Ayodele Olawande, among others.
Presenting the award to Mr. Sawyerr, President of the association, Comrade Olusola Ladoja said the recognition by the apex student body underscores the growing impact of NELFUND in expanding access to higher education and providing financial support to Nigerian students through the student loan scheme.
He said Under Sawyerr’s leadership, the Fund has continued to drive the Federal Government’s vision of ensuring that no willing and qualified Nigerian student is denied education due to financial constraints.
He added that the honour also reflects the appreciation of Nigerian students for ongoing efforts aimed at easing the burden of tuition and upkeep and promoting inclusivity and equal opportunity across tertiary institutions nationwide.
NANS, in its 45 years of existence, has remained a formidable voice for Nigerian students, advocating for policies and initiatives that support academic advancement and student welfare.
