The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) and several parent groups have faulted the Federal Ministry of Education for what they see as a weak and evasive clarification on the new subject selection rule for the 2026 WASSCE.
They argue that the ministry’s December 6 statement dodged the real issue — the fairness of forcing SSS 3 students to sit for subjects they have never been taught since SSS 1.
In a joint statement, ERC’s National Mobilisation Officer, Adaramoye Michael ‘Lenin,’ and a representative of Concerned Parents, Olanrewaju Akinola, warned that the ministry and WAEC are going ahead with an “irrational plan” that could jeopardise thousands of students’ futures.
With WAEC registration already underway and the exam barely four months away, both groups said students are now trapped in an “absurd and impossible” situation.
They explained that the removal of subjects like Civic Education, Tourism, Computer Studies, Storekeeping, Insurance, and Dyeing & Bleaching from the WAEC portal has left many SSS 3 candidates unable to meet the minimum eight subjects unless they pick completely new ones from the revised curriculum — subjects they were never prepared for.
They urged the government to halt and review the changes, insisting that no student should be made to write a subject they were not taught.
