Students at the Government Girls College in Maiduguri, Borno State, have abandoned their school hostels after noticing suspicious activity around the campus, fearing potential abduction. A video obtained by SaharaReporters shows students fleeing the school during the night.
One student, who spoke anonymously, said masked men dressed in black entered the hostels while they were praying in the mosque. She urged government authorities, including the state Chief Security Officer, the Commissioner of Police, and the Commissioner of Education, to intervene promptly to prevent a repeat of the 2014 Chibok girls’ abduction.
The incident comes amid a recent surge in attacks on schools across northern Nigeria. In Niger State, 265 staff and students, including 239 pupils, were kidnapped from St. Mary’s School, while in Kebbi State, around 25 students were abducted from their school, prompting calls for urgent security measures.
These events highlight ongoing security challenges for schools in the region, echoing high-profile kidnappings in the past. Attempts by SaharaReporters to obtain a response from the Borno State Police, specifically ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer, were unsuccessful.
