Access to healthcare can make a big difference in students’ academic success, especially during demanding periods like examinations.
The Faculty of Arts, University of Lagos (UNILAG), in collaboration with the faculty’s alumni association and Cityview Hospital Limited, has inaugurated a ₦30 million healthcare facility to provide medical services for students and staff.
Named the Cityview Hospital Faculty of Arts Clinic, the facility was commissioned recently on the UNILAG campus, becoming the first faculty-based clinic in the university’s history.
The clinic will serve students and staff of both the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Creative Arts under the supervision of the UNILAG Medical Centre.
Speaking at the commissioning, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Akanbi Ilupeju, said the project was conceived to address recurring health challenges among students, particularly during examination periods.
“This project is a major step towards addressing health challenges faced by students, particularly during examination periods, while also ensuring accessible medical care for academic and non-academic staff,” he said.
According to the dean, the facility will also help reduce disruptions to academic activities caused by health emergencies.
The National Social Secretary of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Mr Francis Shonubi, described the clinic as a landmark achievement for the university.
“Today is a historic moment for all of us as we gather for the official grand opening of the Cityview Hospital Faculty of Arts Clinic, the first of its kind in the University of Lagos,” he said.
Shonubi explained that the clinic was established to provide timely healthcare services within the academic environment and improve the welfare of students and staff.
He added that the facility would operate as a full clinic from Monday to Friday, with a resident doctor and nurse on duty.
The clinic is expected to provide healthcare and wellness services exclusively to members of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Creative Arts.
The Faculty of Arts also expressed appreciation to the Chief Medical Director of Cityview Hospital, Dr. Mutiu Shittu, and his management team for supporting the establishment of the clinic.
