The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has collaborated with HumanManager Limited, a subsidiary of SystemSpecs, to deliver a hands-on training programme aimed at sharpening the employability skills of students in Human Resource Management.
Held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe Centre for Information Technology and Systems, the training focused on introducing students of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management to core HR competencies. These include payroll outsourcing, staff records, leave management, performance monitoring, and other essential tools for navigating the modern workplace.
Speaking during the session, Mrs. Mojisola Oladele-Ojo, Head of Business and Partnerships at HumanManager, emphasised the need for adaptability and technical know-how in the evolving HR landscape. “A tree must follow the direction of the wind,” she said, using the metaphor to highlight the importance of staying relevant. “Students must acquire technical and analytical skills that align with international best practices.”
She added that the session was designed to expose students to real-world HR systems and prepare them for the digital transformation reshaping workplaces globally.
Echoing similar sentiments, Dr. Maryam Gbajumo-Sheriff, a lecturer in the Department of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management, noted that the training reflects the vision of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, to produce graduates equipped for the 21st-century workforce. “Teaching alone is not enough. Students must be exposed to hands-on, technical knowledge to become future-ready,” she said.
Dr. Gbajumo-Sheriff described the session as a transformative experience that shifts students from an analogue mindset to a systems-oriented, analytical approach—positioning them as key drivers in Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
The event marked another milestone in UNILAG’s ongoing commitment to fostering innovation, industry relevance, and graduate employability.
