Bayer Leverkusen manager Carles Martinez has explained why Nigeria striker Victor Boniface was left out of the club’s UEFA Europa League squad.
Here are seven key things to know:
1. Boniface Was Not Fully Fit
Martinez said Boniface was not physically ready when Leverkusen submitted their Europa League squad.
According to the coach, the striker was still behind in his fitness levels at the time.
2. He Was Dealing With Knee Problems
The Leverkusen boss revealed that Boniface had been struggling with knee pain during the early stages of the club’s preparations for the season.
3. The Squad Decision Was Made Earlier
Martinez noted that the decision was taken about two months ago, when Boniface’s condition was far from ideal.
At that point, the striker was not in the best shape to compete for a place in the squad.
4. His Recovery Has Improved
The coach said Boniface’s knee is now responding much better to treatment and recovery work.
Although there are still occasional minor issues, his condition has improved significantly.
5. Leverkusen Still Believes in Him
Martinez described Boniface as a highly talented player and said he deserves to enjoy a successful season and career.
6. He Remains in the Coach’s Plans
Despite missing out on the Europa League squad, Boniface is still considered an important player.
Martinez said the Nigerian is often one of the players he thinks about when the team needs goals.
7. The Goal Is to Get Him Back to Full Fitness
Leverkusen’s immediate priority is helping Boniface return to 100 per cent fitness.
The club hopes the striker will be fully recovered and ready to make a strong impact in the months ahead.
