Nigeria’s Super Eagles are on the verge of setting a new goal-scoring record at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco, as preparations intensify for their semi-final clash against host nation Morocco.
The three-time African champions raised their tournament tally to 14 goals following a convincing 2–0 quarter-final victory over Algeria in Marrakesh on Saturday, leaving them just two goals short of the all-time AFCON record of 16, set by Ivory Coast in 2008. Nigeria’s goals in the quarter-final were scored by Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams.
Nigeria’s prolific scoring run began in the group stage, where they netted eight goals to finish top of Group C, before adding four goals against Mozambique in the round of 16 in Fez. The Super Eagles have now emerged as one of the most potent attacking sides at the tournament.
As part of preparations for Wednesday’s semi-final, the Super Eagles trained behind closed doors in Rabat on Monday. The team arrived in the Moroccan capital from Fez earlier in the day and are camped at the Rihab Hotel, with the training session held at the Complexe Mohammed VI.
Team media officer, Promise Efoghe, explained that the session was closed to the public to allow head coach Eric Chelle conduct detailed tactical work away from external scrutiny, as Nigeria seeks to maintain their strong form and edge closer to both a place in the final and a historic scoring feat.
Among the remaining semi-finalists, Senegal have scored 11 goals, while Egypt and hosts Morocco have recorded nine goals each after five matches. Nigeria will be aiming to extend their scoring streak and etch their name into AFCON history.
