Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) have been shortlisted for the Nigerian Universities Ranking, highlighting the growing visibility of universities in Kano State.
The two institutions were listed alongside several prominent universities, including Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the University of Lagos, Abia State University, Bowen University and Bingham University.
Although the final ranking is yet to be released, the inclusion of BUK and MAAUN in the shortlist highlights the increasing presence of Kano-based institutions in Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
BUK has remained one of Kano’s major academic institutions for decades, contributing to teaching, research and scholarship. Its appearance on the shortlist adds to its profile as one of the established universities in the Nigerian higher education sector.
MAAUN, meanwhile, reflects the expanding role of private universities in Kano and the wider North-West region. The institution has gained visibility through participation in various international academic and university ranking exercises, including the AD Scientific Index and Times Higher Education rankings.
The development comes as Kano’s higher education sector continues to expand. The state now has federal and state universities as well as several private institutions, providing opportunities for thousands of students to pursue tertiary education.
The growing number of universities has also increased competition across Nigeria’s higher education sector, with institutions seeking to strengthen teaching, research, innovation, academic standards and their contributions to society.
University rankings can provide one way of assessing these areas, although they are only one measure of an institution’s performance. Factors such as teaching quality, research output, graduate outcomes, infrastructure and student experience also remain important when assessing universities.
For Kano State, the presence of BUK and MAAUN on the shortlist draws attention to the state’s expanding contribution to Nigeria’s higher education sector.
The final Nigerian Universities Ranking is expected to provide further details on how the shortlisted institutions performed against the criteria used in the exercise.
Until the final results are released, the inclusion of BUK and MAAUN places two Kano-based universities among the institutions being considered in the latest national assessment of Nigerian universities.
