ND or OND? 5 Facts About Nigerian Polytechnics

When many students think about higher education in Nigeria, universities are often the first option that come to mind.

Part of the reason is the long-standing polytechnic-university dichotomy, which has created the impression that polytechnics are somehow less valuable. Over the years, this perception has discouraged many students from considering polytechnics, despite the important role they play in developing skilled manpower for the economy.

The reality, however, is that there are several things people should know about Nigerian polytechnics.

1. Polytechnics Are Built Around Practical Learning

One of the biggest strengths of polytechnics is their focus on hands-on training.

While universities are often more theory-oriented, polytechnics place a strong emphasis on practical skills, technical competence and industry-based learning. Students are trained to apply what they learn to real-life situations, making them valuable in many sectors of the economy.

2. They Operate the ND and HND System

Polytechnics award the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND).

Many people still use the term OND (Ordinary National Diploma), but the recognised qualification today is the National Diploma (ND). After completing the ND programme and the required industrial training, students can proceed to the HND level.

3. The Dichotomy Has Shaped Public Perception

For years, the polytechnic-university dichotomy influenced how employers and society viewed graduates.

Despite producing highly skilled graduates, many polytechnic alumni have often felt less recognised than their university counterparts. While efforts have been made to address this challenge, the perception still exists in some quarters and continues to shape how some people view polytechnic education.

4. Many Polytechnics Are Becoming Universities

Across Nigeria, several polytechnics are being converted into universities.

This trend has become increasingly common as governments seek to expand access to university education. Institutions that once operated as polytechnics are gradually changing status, reducing the number of polytechnics in the country and raising questions about the future of technical education.

5. Polytechnic Graduates Are Important to Economic Development

From engineering and technology to business, agriculture and manufacturing, polytechnic graduates play critical roles across different sectors.

Nigeria’s push for industrialisation, innovation and skills development depends heavily on graduates who possess practical and technical expertise. This makes polytechnic education an important part of the country’s development journey.

The value of an institution should not be measured by its label alone. What matters most is the quality of education, the skills acquired and how those skills are applied to solve problems and create opportunities. Above all, be sure of what you want and keep learning.
