Access to quality research materials remains a major challenge for many Nigerian students. At Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, that could soon begin to change.
The Executive Secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, has commenced the construction of a Research Centre of Excellence and Digital Library at his alma mater in Kogi State.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, the project’s coordinator, Dr. Mohammed Umar, said the facility is being developed to global standards to improve research, teaching and learning.
According to him, the digital library will provide accounting students across universities with access to a wide range of academic resources through partnerships with professional bodies in Nigeria and abroad.
“The digital library will partner with professional bodies nationally and internationally to provide digital accounting textbooks and free resources.
“Additionally, the digital library will grant lecturers access to the latest publications to support their research and teaching,” Umar said.
Beyond access to books and journals, the centre will also mobilise research funding to support academic research within PAAU and other higher institutions.
The facility will be equipped with uninterrupted power supply, high-speed internet, a borehole and modern seminar rooms to create a more conducive environment for learning and research.
Describing the project as a major step forward, Umar said the centre would transform access to knowledge and research skills within the university.
He added that Dr. Olowo was inspired by his passion for knowledge sharing and academic excellence.
“The centre will be a leading driver of innovation in the university and nationally,” he said.
Umar also disclosed that the project will be funded through the support of stakeholders and by leveraging Olowo’s goodwill.
As universities continue to seek better learning facilities, projects like this highlight how alumni support can expand research opportunities and give students access to the resources they need to compete globally.
