Students Studying Far From Home? 5 Questions You Should Stop Asking Them
Edutimes Africa Job Portal Edutimes Africa Job Portal Edutimes Africa Job Portal

A student from Lagos studying in Maiduguri. Another from Port Harcourt attending school in Zaria. Someone from Ibadan trying to build a life in Sokoto.

Every year, thousands of Nigerian students leave home to pursue their education in states and regions far from where they grew up. Along the way, they adjust to new cultures, unfamiliar environments, long-distance travel and, sometimes, homesickness.

While many of these students appreciate the concern from friends and family, there are some questions they hear so often that they can become tiring.

Here are five questions you may want to stop asking students who study far from home.

1. “When Are You Coming Home?”

In many cases, the answer depends on one thing: money.

With transportation costs rising, travelling across the country is not always a simple decision. Some students spend months planning trips home and may not be able to return as often as they would like.

2. “Why Didn’t You Just Choose a School Closer to Home?”

Not every student had that option.

Some chose their universities because of the course they wanted to study. Others accepted admission where it was available. In many cases, attending a distant university was the result of careful decisions rather than personal preference.

3. “Don’t You Miss Your Family Too Much?”

The honest answer is usually yes.

Being far from home often means missing birthdays, family gatherings, celebrations and important moments. Many students learn to cope with the distance, but that does not mean they stop missing the people they care about.

4. “So, Can You Speak Their Language Now?”

Students who relocate to another region often hear this question.

While some pick up words and phrases from the local language, adapting to a new environment goes far beyond language. It involves understanding different cultures, customs, lifestyles and ways of interacting with people.

5. “You Must Be Enjoying All the Freedom, Right?”

Freedom is only one part of the story.

Studying far from home also comes with responsibilities. Students often have to manage their finances, handle personal challenges, make important decisions on their own and figure out how to navigate life without immediate family support.

Studying far from home is about more than travelling hundreds of kilometres away from family. It is an experience that teaches independence, resilience and adaptability.

In many cases, the journey is not always easy. But it often leaves them with stories, friendships and life lessons that stay with them long after graduation.

So the next time you meet a student studying far from home, remember that their university experience involves much more than lectures, assignments and examinations. Sometimes, the distance itself becomes part of their education.
