TEAM FUTA Wins South West Zone 1 Deans of Engineering Competition
….To Represent South West at Abuja Grand Finale
Heritage Ayeni final student in the Department of Agricultural Engineering , Federal University of Technology Akure has won the First position in the 2026 Committee of Deans of Engineering and Technology of Nigerian Universities CODET ,South West Zone 1. At the final of the competition which took place on Wednesday June 17 ,2026 at the TI Auditorium of FUTA , Judges picked the presentation of Ayeni , Breaking the Shell: An integrated mechanized continuous-process Snail meat extraction system for sub-Saharan African Agro-industries as the best of the lot with 68% score. Odogwu Nwaeze Newman from Elizade University with Development of a payment system for water distribution in Cluster farming and a score of 66.25% came 2nd while Aluko Odunayo Morenikeji of Afe Babalola University Ado Ekiti ABUAD with Design and Development of Pedal powered exercise bicycle with energy storage and IoT monitoring came 3rd with 65% score and Chukwu Chimaroke Miracle of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology Ikere ,BOUESTI with Design, Construction and evaluation of a gas-charcoal powered cooker enhanced with intelligent control systems and a score of 60.5% came 4th.
In the Team category, Abiodun Peter Gbenga, and Ekundayo John Olaoluwa Department of Mechanical Engineering , who presented Optimized Design, fabrication and Performance evaluation of a Bean dehusking machine for improved food processing scored 71.25% to clinch the 1st position for the FUTA. Team ABUAD which presented AI-Powered Autonomous Quadcopter for intelligent Security and detection anomaly through Frances Uchenna Ugwu scored 68% to come 2nd while BOUESTI’s Design, fabrication and performance evaluation of a 7 kg dual-mode washing machine with a low-cost water recycling system via -Adu Precious Oluwatunmise-Semudara Iseoluwa David-Ajayi Peter Ademola-Ahmed Olabode Idris 64.5% came 3rd
FUTA having emerged the winner will proceed to the national level to represent CODET Zone 1 in the next phase of the CODET Competition coming up in Abuja.
The assessors did not only listened to the presentation but they also went around the exhibition and witnessed the demonstrations of those projects. The results were average scores of all the four independent assessors. Four independent assessors were used to assess students project and make honest assessment and scored while the average scores were announced by the Akure branch chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. ‘Seun Adeyeye FNSE.
Declaring open the ceremony the Vice Chancellor, FUTA Professor Adenike Oladiji who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Professor Taiwo Amos said the CODET Competition was designed to align with university curriculum to answer today’s questions and demands from today’s engineers. The Vice Chancellor who affirmed that the Dean of engineering carries a great burden considering the fact that engineering saves lives ,by building bridges and solving real lives problems appreciated all participants who travelled across the three states from Osun, Ekiti and Ondo State to attend the event.
The Vice Chancellor who said that engineering is a profession for nation building stressed that the competition was therefore for nation building and not just for the prize money or the certificate but for the ingenuity that it is bringing out from our engineers. Oladiji advised the organizers to create linkages with industries for products of the competition.
In a remark the Chairman Nigerian Society Of Engineers, Engineer Seun Adeyeye who announced the results commended the participants for their dedication. He said, “students should know that assessors are very free and fair in scoring them .No partiality. The NSE boss who was one of the assessors encouraged the students to take to all the advice, suggestions and inputs made by assessors to improve on their work, particularly for the winners as they appear for further competitions in the next phase of the event.
On his part ,the Dean School of Infrastructure, Mineral and Manufacturing Engineering SIMME Professor Christopher Akinbile who also doubles as the SouthWest 1 Zonal CODET competition coordinator, noted that CODET was founded to bring together Deans of Engineering in Nigeria to standardize Engineering education. He said” CODET was established to function as the umbrella body for national heads of Engineering Faculty, aligning University curricula with accreditation standards set by COREN.” Akinbile expressed optimism that all the various workshops and programs put in place by the university will impact positively on students ,staff and the School Of Engineering at large as he expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor Of the university professor Adenike Oladiji for giving the needed backing to all their programmes.
Also speaking at the event, the Dean, School Of Electrical Systems Engineering, Professor Adegoke Melodi affirmed that FUTA was selected to host this event considering that it is a reputable University capable of hosting a fair competition. Melodi pointed out that all activities of the Committee Of Deans of Nigerian Universities CODET and the Committee For The Regulation of Engineering In Nigeria COREN are towards the aim of advancing the engineering profession in the country .
In her welcome address ,the Chairman Local Organizing Committee ,Professor Mayowa Ikumapayi said the CODET competition is under three categories namely the best engineering graduate students, Engineering projects and the best national engineering academic publication” Ikumapayi appreciated all who contributed to the success of the program including students from the various institutions that participated as well as assessors , members of the committee and the university management
