The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has launched Beyond the Campus, a flagship career development initiative aimed at equipping final-year students with the skills, mentorship and professional networks required to thrive in the modern workplace.
The maiden edition of the programme, organised by the University’s Office of Career Development Services (OCDS), was held on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, at the Jelili Adebisi Omotola Multipurpose Hall.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Foluso Afolabi Lesi, described the initiative as a strategic effort to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice.
He said the programme aligns with UNILAG’s vision of producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped with the practical skills needed to excel in today’s dynamic job market.
Prof. Lesi encouraged students to maximise the opportunity by learning from accomplished professionals, stressing that success in the workplace requires resilience, adaptability, integrity, effective communication and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Director of OCDS, Dr Mojisola Manuel, described Beyond the Campus as the beginning of a transformative journey designed to support students’ transition from university into rewarding careers.
She reaffirmed the office’s commitment to providing mentorship, career guidance, skills development and strategic industry partnerships to improve students’ employability in an increasingly competitive global economy.
A major highlight of the event was the inauguration of distinguished professionals as Patrons and Patronesses of the UNILAG Career Development Club. They include the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, represented by Mr Anaele Chima; Founder of EbonyLife Media, Mrs Mo Abudu; Founder of Terra Kulture and BAP Productions, Mrs Bolanle Austen-Peters, represented by Ms Deborah Egbekan; Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board, Barr. Adebola Agbaminoja; Chief Executive Officer of Open Access Data Centre, Mr Ayotunde Coker; and Group Programme Director of Classic FM and Founder of Chico Radio Workshop, Mr Chukwuma “Chico” Aligwekwe.
The honourees urged students to remain focused, embrace continuous learning and build strong professional networks to position themselves for opportunities beyond the classroom.
The programme also featured a session on Navigating Life Purpose and Mental Health delivered by Dr Ololade Fadipe, who emphasised the importance of mental well-being, resilience and seeking support when necessary.
Students were also introduced to JobRed’s 12 Core Talents Framework, which highlighted key workplace competencies such as leadership, communication, critical thinking, adaptability, emotional intelligence and sound character.
The university said the initiative marks a renewed commitment to preparing students for meaningful careers and lifelong professional success.
