WAEC Nigeria’s new Head of National Office, Mr S.D. Kum, is coming into the role with a record of taking a firm position against examination malpractice.
In 2022, Kum issued de-recognition letters to 35 secondary schools in Rivers State after they were indicted for mass cheating and examination malpractice.
Now, as he takes charge of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria, here are five things to know about him.
1. He Is WAEC Nigeria’s New Head of National Office
Kum was appointed the new Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC Nigeria, effective Friday, October 2, 2026.
He succeeds Dr Amos Dangut, who served as HNO for nearly three years before being appointed Registrar of WAEC International in June 2026.
Dangut is expected to assume his new position at WAEC’s international headquarters in Accra, Ghana.
2. He Previously Headed Test Administration
Before becoming HNO, Kum served as Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of Test Administration at WAEC Nigeria.
The position gave him experience in the administration and coordination of examinations.
3. He Has Worked Across Different Parts of Nigeria
Kum has held different positions within WAEC, including Branch Controller and Zonal Coordinator.
He served in various regional offices, including Rivers State, where he was involved in the administration and coordination of examinations.
4. He Has Been Involved in Tackling Exam Malpractice
During his time as a Zonal Coordinator, Kum played a role in enforcing the anti-malpractice directives of the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC).
His actions in Rivers State in 2022 brought him wider attention after 35 secondary schools were de-recognised over cases of mass cheating and examination malpractice.
5. He Has Worked With Schools and Government Agencies
Throughout his career, Kum has worked with state ministries of education, school principals and security agencies.
His experience has included coordinating examination schedules, strengthening examination security and supporting the effective administration of WAEC examinations.
With his appointment, Kum now takes charge of WAEC Nigeria as the council enters a new phase following Dangut’s move to WAEC’s international headquarters.
