Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, is set to host the 15th edition of the West African University Games (WAUG), bringing together student-athletes and university communities from across the region.
If you’ve been hearing about WAUG and wondering what it is all about, here are six things worth knowing.
1. WAUG Is a Regional University Sports Competition
The West African University Games is one of the biggest university sporting events in the region. It brings together students from universities across West African countries to compete in different sports while representing their institutions.
2. OAU Is Hosting the 2026 Edition
This year’s Games will take place at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, from October 2 to October 12, 2026.
The university will welcome athletes, officials and university delegations from different parts of West Africa during the competition.
3. Several Sports Will Be Featured
Student-athletes will compete in a range of sporting events, including:
– Football
– Athletics
– Basketball
– Volleyball
– Swimming
– Table Tennis
– Badminton
– Boxing
Other sporting activities are also expected to be part of the programme.
4. It Is More Than Just Winning Medals
While the Games are competitive, WAUG is also designed to encourage friendship, interaction and collaboration among students from different countries and universities.
For many participants, it is an opportunity to build networks and experience cultures beyond their own campuses.
5. Months of Preparation Go Into Hosting WAUG
Hosting a regional event of this scale involves extensive planning.
According to organisers, preparations have covered sporting facilities, accommodation, transportation, security arrangements and medical services to support athletes and visitors throughout the Games.
6. The Event Also Celebrates Culture
Beyond sports, WAUG 2026 will showcase aspects of the cultural heritage of Ile-Ife, the host city.
Organisers have already unveiled the official logo and mascot for the Games, both inspired by the history and cultural identity of the ancient town.
As universities from across West Africa converge on OAU, the Games are expected to offer a blend of sporting competition, cultural exchange and student engagement, making it one of the major university events on the region’s academic calendar this year.
