WhatsApp to Charge Businesses for Customer Messages From October 1

Meta is set to introduce new charges for certain WhatsApp business messages from October 1, 2026, a move that could increase communication costs for Nigerian companies that rely heavily on the platform.

The new pricing will affect businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform, also known as the WhatsApp Business API, rather than ordinary WhatsApp users or businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app.

Under the new system, businesses will pay for certain delivered service messages that were previously free when sent within WhatsApp’s 24-hour customer-service window.

How much will businesses pay?

For businesses communicating with customers in Nigeria, a chargeable utility-type message will cost about $0.0101, or roughly ₦14 per message, based on the exchange rate used in current reports.

Marketing messages will attract a significantly higher charge of about $0.062, equivalent to approximately ₦84 per message.

The cost may appear small for an individual message, but it could become significant for companies sending hundreds of thousands or millions of messages.

For example, a Nigerian fintech sending 500,000 chargeable utility messages at $0.0101 each would incur about $5,050 in Meta messaging fees alone.

Additional costs could also come from business solution providers, software platforms or other technology companies used to connect businesses to the WhatsApp Business Platform.

Banks, fintechs, retailers among affected businesses

The change could have implications for businesses that use WhatsApp to communicate with large numbers of customers.

Banks and fintech companies use the platform for customer support and transaction-related communication, while retailers, airlines, telecommunications companies and other businesses use it for enquiries, order updates, notifications and sales.

For such businesses, the new charges could make WhatsApp a more significant operating expense.

Ordinary WhatsApp users will not be charged

Despite reports that WhatsApp will begin charging “per message”, the change does not mean ordinary users will have to pay to send WhatsApp messages.

The charges are targeted at companies using the WhatsApp Business Platform/API for commercial communication at scale. Businesses using the regular WhatsApp Business app are also not the primary target of the change.

Meta has been gradually moving towards a per-message pricing model. In July 2025, the company moved away from its previous conversation-based pricing structure for business-initiated template messages.

The October 2026 change goes further by removing some of the free treatment previously available to service messages sent during the 24-hour customer-service window.

For Nigerian businesses, the development means companies may need to monitor their WhatsApp messaging volumes more closely and determine which customer communications are essential.

For consumers, however, there is no new ₦14 charge for sending a normal WhatsApp message to friends, family or other users.
