Babcock University on Sunday, July 27, held its 2025 Convocation Ceremony with pomp and pride as the Chancellor of the institution, Pastor (Professor) Bassey Udoh, delivered an inspiring keynote speech, charging graduates to become leaders, nation-builders, and torchbearers of integrity in an uncertain world.
Addressing the large gathering of dignitaries, parents, honourees, staff, students, and well-wishers at the university’s Ilishan-Remo campus, the Chancellor congratulated the Charis Class of 2025, noting that their academic journey had been marked by faith, courage, and perseverance. He described the graduation as more than a conferment of degrees—it was a moment of commissioning a new generation to serve, lead, and influence their world with Christ-centered values.
“Today, we do not merely confer degrees; we release a new generation of leaders, innovators, nation-builders, and ambassadors of hope into a world yearning for direction, wisdom, and integrity,” he said.
Leadership is a Sacred Responsibility, Not Ceremony
Reflecting on the role of governance in the university, Professor Udoh emphasized that his responsibility as Chancellor—and the role of the Board of Trustees—extends beyond ceremonial functions to strategic, constitutional, and spiritual oversight. He explained that the university’s governing body is intentional about safeguarding Babcock’s mission, its Adventist faith heritage, and its alignment with national development goals.
“We are not just overseeing policies; we are shaping the destiny of one of Africa’s most respected faith-based institutions,” he declared.
He detailed how the governing council under his leadership continues to advocate for Babcock at national and international platforms, building networks that span education, healthcare, business, and community development.
Deep Engagement with Internal Systems
Professor Udoh highlighted the critical role of internal stewardship in sustaining excellence, stating that success is not only birthed by vision but also nurtured through operational diligence. According to him, the governing body actively monitors academic performance, spiritual growth, and internal efficiency.
“We ask the hard questions and ensure that accountability is not just a principle—but a practice,” he stressed.
Representing the Institution’s Values
As the public face of the university, the Chancellor acknowledged the trust and privilege of representing the ideals of Babcock to stakeholders across sectors. He said every public engagement is an opportunity to showcase the institution’s identity—rooted in excellence, integrity, service, and faith.
He further praised the partnerships Babcock has built over the years, noting that collaboration with global and local institutions has empowered students and faculty, and deepened the school’s impact in the communities it serves.
Sound Financial and Strategic Planning
Professor Udoh reiterated that leadership must be matched with resourcing. He said the university has put in place robust financial systems, improved infrastructure, and strengthened committee structures to ensure that every strategy is not only visionary but feasible.
“Leadership without resources is aspiration without execution,” he asserted, adding that compliance with national and international education policies remains a moral and institutional obligation.
Working Together for Greater Impact
Describing the university’s leadership style as collaborative, the Chancellor praised the fruitful working relationship he enjoys with the Vice Chancellor, Deans, Directors, and other leaders. He acknowledged the ongoing efforts in research expansion, staff development, and student-centered global engagements.
“We are investing in people because they are the most enduring capital of any great university,” he noted.
A Heartfelt Charge to Graduates
In a passionate call to the Class of 2025, Chancellor Udoh reminded them that while their time at Babcock may end, the values they acquired must never fade. He urged the graduates to carry the torch of Christian leadership, to act justly, innovate boldly, and live out their convictions in a complex world.
“The world you enter is filled with uncertainty. But you are not helpless. You are empowered with knowledge, equipped with faith, and called to lead,” he said.
“Let your name be a light in the dark. Let your work be a voice of truth. Let your life be a reflection of hope.”
Appreciation and Benediction
The Chancellor also extended his appreciation to the university’s faculty, staff, parents, and the honorary degree recipients, commending them for their unwavering support and commitment to the university’s mission.
He concluded the speech with a prayerful benediction:
“To the Class of 2025—you are our pride, our proof, and our promise. Congratulations, and may God bless you richly as you rise to your calling. God bless Babcock University. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The 2025 convocation ceremony marked another milestone in Babcock University’s long-standing tradition of nurturing holistic leaders grounded in character and competence. The event featured degree awards across undergraduate and postgraduate categories, as well as the conferment of honorary degrees on distinguished personalities who have made notable contributions to society.
