Eight students of the University of Jos have died in a road crash opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road, Jos.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday and involved a bus conveying 11 students and a trailer. Eyewitnesses said the bus was speeding and attempted a wrongful overtaking before the driver lost control and crashed into the trailer.
Seven students died on the spot, while one more passed away at the hospital, bringing the total number of deaths to eight.
The remaining three students are receiving treatment. All the victims are males.
The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Peter Longsan, confirmed the crash, noting that officers received the distress call around 2:30am.
He said: “Seven victims were confirmed dead at the scene, and one later died in the hospital. Three others are currently receiving treatment.”
FRSC Sector Commander, Olajide Mogaji, described the crash as avoidable and cautioned motorists against night travel, excessive speed, dangerous overtaking, and driving when tired or unwell.
“The government needs you alive to enjoy this festive season and beyond,” he said.
He urged the public to call the FRSC toll-free line 122 to report crashes or road emergencies.
