As Nigeria prepares to mark the 2025 World Teachers’ Day on October 5, the Federal Government has restated its commitment to enhancing the welfare, recognition, and professional development of teachers nationwide.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja during a symposium held in anticipation of the celebration. He was accompanied by the Minister of State for Education.
This year’s theme, “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” highlights the importance of teamwork and shared responsibility in advancing education delivery.
Dr. Alausa hailed teachers as “custodians of knowledge, builders of character, and architects of the nation’s future,” stressing that no profession exists without them.
“Who makes a doctor? Who makes an engineer? Who makes a professor? It is the teacher. That is why government is working assiduously to provide better packages for you. Light is at the end of the tunnel,” he assured.
The Minister emphasized that the quality of education depends on the quality of teachers, pledging that the government would continue to provide training, recognition, and support to help them excel.
He also commended teachers for producing globally competitive graduates, noting that Nigerian students perform excellently across the world because of their sacrifices.
“We know we can’t pay you enough, but be proud of yourselves. On behalf of the President, I commend your diligence and commitment to nation-building,” he added.
World Teachers’ Day, established by UNESCO in 1994 in collaboration with the ILO, UNICEF, and Education International, is observed annually to celebrate teachers’ contributions to society.
