The newly elected leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun State Joint Campus Committee, has urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to urgently improve infrastructure and increase funding across all state-owned tertiary institutions.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new JCC leadership and an education summit held at the Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences, Ilese-Ijebu, the new chairman, Gabriel Francis, said many campuses in the state were struggling with poor facilities and inadequate funding.
Francis commended Governor Abiodun for supporting the student community, but stressed that significant gaps still exist in classrooms, laboratories, hostels, libraries, security and transportation.
“Our institutions urgently need modern classrooms, functional labs, hostels, libraries, safe learning spaces and reliable transportation,” he said. “These demands are not luxuries but necessities for meaningful education.”
He also called for an increase in government subvention to tertiary institutions, saying poor funding affects teaching quality, staff morale and the overall learning experience.
Francis appealed for the reactivation and expansion of bursary and scholarship schemes, noting that rising economic hardship has put many students under pressure. According to him, a structured, transparent and yearly bursary system would help students stay in school and excel.
He thanked stakeholders for their support and pledged that his administration would be guided by accountability, inclusiveness and a strong commitment to student welfare.
In his goodwill message, the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Adeyemi Ajasa, urged the new JCC leadership to remain focused on the core mission of the association—student welfare, campus safety and constructive engagement with government.
Ajasa cautioned student leaders against confusing loyalty with subservience, saying NANS must remain committed to protecting its constituents.
