The Federal Government has launched a mobile learning initiative aimed at strengthening the professional development of female teachers and school leaders through innovative digital learning technologies.
The initiative, unveiled in Abuja on Monday, is being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education in partnership with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) and the Pan-African University (PAU).
The programme began with a three-day Master Training Programme scheduled to run from July 21 to July 23, 2026, under the theme, “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative.”
According to the ministry, the project is funded by the Government of Japan and targets educators in five African countries—Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya and South Sudan.
The initiative is designed to improve access to continuous professional development for teachers, particularly women, by leveraging mobile technology to deliver flexible, low-data and offline-friendly learning resources.
The Federal Ministry of Education said the programme seeks to address barriers such as geographical limitations, inadequate infrastructure and time constraints that often prevent teachers from accessing quality professional training.
It noted that participants will be able to access learning materials anytime and anywhere through mobile-based platforms, helping to improve teaching quality and learning outcomes.
The ministry reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening teacher capacity through digital innovation, stressing that accessible professional development is critical to building an inclusive, resilient and future-ready education system.
The ministry added that the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance teacher quality and promote technology-driven education across the country.
