The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has dismissed as false a viral claim that Nigerian students who fail to repay their education loans could face life imprisonment.
The claim has circulated widely on social media, generating concern among students and beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.
NELFUND said the information was fake and urged members of the public to disregard the claim.
The clarification comes as the student loan scheme continues to expand across public tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
NELFUND Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, recently said demand for the loans had been overwhelming, with the organisation reporting significant disbursements to students.
The fund has repeatedly urged students to rely on its official communication channels for information about eligibility, disbursement and repayment.
The latest clarification is therefore important for beneficiaries who may have encountered the viral claim online.
Students and members of the public are advised to verify information about the student loan scheme before sharing or acting on social media reports.
