The Abia State Government has announced plans to implement compulsory free basic education starting in 2025 for primary schools and Junior Secondary Schools (JSS 1–3).
Governor Alex Otti approved this initiative as part of his administration’s commitment to transforming the education sector in the state.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, disclosed this during a ceremony in Umuahia on Friday, where outstanding students from Abia State were celebrated for their achievements at the 27th National Junior Engineers, Technicians, and Scientists (JETS) competition held in Abuja.
Ubochi highlighted that the JETS competition served as a platform to showcase students’ creativity and problem-solving skills, fostering innovation and enhancing their academic potential.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, and Executive Board Chairman of ASUBEB, Mrs. Lydia Onuoha, commended the state government’s dedication to education, attributing the students’ success to its focused policies and support.
The chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Abia, Friday Madu, also praised the students for their exceptional performance.
In recognition of their achievements, the students received learning equipment, while their teachers were awarded cash prizes.
The free education program aligns with Governor Otti’s vision to make quality education accessible to all children in the state, ensuring a brighter future for the youth of Abia.
