The African Union (AU) has highlighted the groundbreaking contributions of young women innovators in Africa’s education sector, aligning with the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) and Agenda 2063’s “Aspiration 6.”
Since the inception of the Innovating Education Expo in Africa in 2018, these initiatives have spotlighted the transformative role of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in addressing socio-economic challenges.
The AU’s efforts, spearheaded by the African Union International Centre for Girls’ and Women’s Education in Africa (AU/CIEFFA), have empowered women and girls through education and technology.
Notable among the awardees is Susannah Farr from South Africa, CEO of the Gold Youth Development Agency (GYDA). Her peer-education model has positively influenced over 55,000 young people across 123 communities in four countries, addressing educational challenges and unemployment.

In East Africa, Anne Nyaboke Wakesho of eLimu Kenya developed “Hadithi Hadithi,” a literacy app designed for marginalized communities. By integrating culturally relevant stories and innovative learning techniques, the app has accelerated literacy development.

From Rwanda, Amina Umuhoza created Dukataze, an online platform offering girls career guidance, reproductive health counseling, and entrepreneurial training. Dukataze also incorporates e-commerce opportunities to support young women financially.

Cameroon’s Angèle Messa, founder of Educlik, has pioneered alternative teaching methods for vulnerable populations, reaching over 3,000 individuals through digitized education content.

Ghanaian engineer Dr. Anita Antwiwaa of All Nations University Space Systems Technology Laboratory champions youth education in space science and electronics. Her work in developing GhanaSat-1 and CanSat training programs inspires young women to explore STEM careers.

The Innovating Education Expo provides a platform for innovators to scale their projects and contribute to accessible, inclusive, and high-quality education.
