The Federal Government has moved to calm growing anxieties among students, parents and school proprietors over the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) registration, saying no subject has been removed or restricted under the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum.
Uncertainty had spread across schools in recent days, with many students expressing fear that some subjects—especially ICT and trade subjects—had been cancelled or limited to certain departments.
In a statement on Friday, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Sa’id Suwaiba Ahmad, said all approved subjects remain fully open to students, regardless of whether they are in science, arts or social science classes.
They stressed that the curriculum was designed to be flexible and student-centred so that students can freely select subjects that match their interests and career goals.
According to them, science students may choose arts or social science subjects, while arts and social science students may also select science-related subjects if properly guided.
The ministers also clarified issues surrounding the subject formerly known as Information and Communication Technology (ICT). They said it has simply been renamed Digital Technology, with no changes to its content. Students who previously offered ICT, they noted, are fully eligible to register for and sit the Digital Technology examination.
On trade subjects, the ministry explained that only six have been approved under the curriculum. A student may register for any of them—but only if the school offers the subject and the student has been taught. Those who were not exposed to any trade subject, the ministry added, are not required to register for one.
The government urged parents, counsellors and school administrators to rely on verified information and ensure proper guidance for students as the registration continues.
It reaffirmed its commitment to a smooth, inclusive and well-coordinated WAEC registration process nationwide.
