The Malawi Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) has reversed its earlier decision to delay the opening of Term Two for some schools affected by floods, announcing that most public secondary schools will now resume as scheduled.
The announcement was made in a press release issued on January 4, 2026, in Lilongwe.
The reversal follows a statement by the Roads Authority confirming that a temporary access point at Mpasadzi Bridge along the M1 road has been opened to traffic. The bridge had earlier been affected by flooding, disrupting movement and prompting concerns about safe access to schools in some parts of the country.
According to the ministry, all public national and district boarding secondary schools will now reopen on January 5, 2026, in line with the original academic calendar. This marks a partial reversal of the decision announced on January 3, which had delayed the resumption of activities in some schools due to flood-related challenges.
However, the ministry clarified that public schools in Nkhotakota District will remain closed for an additional week. These schools are now expected to open on January 12, 2026, to allow ongoing flood-response and recovery efforts within the district to be completed.
The press release, signed by the Secretary for Education, Science and Technology, Ken Ndala, PhD, assured the public that the decision was taken in the interest of safety and accessibility.
The ministry also provided contact details for further inquiries, urging parents, guardians, and school authorities to take note of the updated reopening dates.
