Students and teachers of a school in the Ogba area of Lagos narrowly escaped death on Monday after a four-storey building housing the institution collapsed moments after they evacuated the structure.
The building, which housed Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College, reportedly caved in around noon, less than three minutes after students and staff were moved out of the premises.
The incident occurred at No. 11 Adudatu Street, behind County Hospital, in the Aguda area of Ogba.
Although the collapse caused panic in the neighbourhood, no casualties have been reported as of the time of filing this report. The timely evacuation of students and staff is believed to have prevented what could have been a major tragedy.
Residents and passersby gathered at the scene shortly after the collapse, while emergency responders were alerted to assess the situation and ensure the area was secured.
The incident has again raised concerns over the structural integrity of school buildings and the need for stricter monitoring and enforcement of building safety standards across schools in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the cause of the collapse as investigations are expected to commence.
