Alumni of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), Class of 2004, have invested over ₦10 million in the renovation of a lecture room at the institution, as part of activities marking their 20th anniversary.
The project was unveiled during a reunion held at the CMUL campus in Idi-Araba, Lagos, themed “20 Years Strong: Our Journey So Far.”
Speaking at the event, the chairman of the reunion, Dr Olayemi Dawodu, said the initiative was driven by a desire to improve the learning experience of current medical students and give back to the institution that shaped their careers.
“This institution poured into us. Now it is our turn to pour back,” she said.
The renovated lecture room has been upgraded to international standards, featuring smart televisions, inverter-powered 24-hour electricity, and an improved learning environment.
Beyond the infrastructure upgrade, the alumni also discussed the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine. Dr Dawodu noted that AI could help address the shortage of medical specialists in rural and underserved communities, stressing that technology should support, not replace, professional expertise.
She explained that AI-enabled remote diagnosis could improve access to quality healthcare for patients who lack specialist services.
The reunion also featured panel discussions on the application and ethical considerations of AI in medicine and dentistry.
A member of the local planning committee, Dr Dipo Ayedun, said the alumni’s collaboration with medical professionals abroad would expose students to global perspectives and mentorship opportunities.
The Class of 2004 further announced plans to introduce a structured mentorship programme for medical students and young doctors, alongside sustained investments in medical education and research at CMUL.
