Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, has teamed up with international tech firm MiGO Mobile to launch a technology hub aimed at boosting research, innovation, and skills development among Nigerian students.
The new Care and Research Development Centre was unveiled on Thursday at the CUCRID Auditorium, marking a major step in giving students hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology.
Speaking at the launch, George Evans, CEO and Managing Director of MiGO Mobile, said the collaboration is about more than gadgets — it’s about building a legacy and helping the next generation see their potential.
“For me, it’s really not about products; it’s about working with people and helping the next generation to see themselves first, so they can believe they can do it and ultimately take that step,” Evans said.
He added that training students in technology has a ripple effect on society, contributing to national development. Evans also revealed plans to make MiGO smartphones available at selected MTN outlets, starting with a pilot in 16 locations before scaling nationwide.
The MiGO CEO praised Covenant University as the right partner, noting their shared vision for innovation, research, and impact.
“Beyond product displays, MiGO focuses on service delivery, research and development, and expanding maintenance networks,” he said. The company currently operates seven maintenance offices in Lagos and plans to establish 28 more across the country.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Timothy Anake expressed excitement at the launch, describing it as “the joy of a mother who has just given birth to a baby.” He said the hub will benefit not just students, but faculty, staff, and the wider community.
Students will gain exposure to technology transfer, research and development, and opportunities for internships and employment with MiGO. The initiative will also include scholarships and ambassadorial programs that will grow year after year.
“What we see today speaks to vision and alignment in action—across inspiration, empowerment, and training,” Anake said.
“The best vision is not just what you see from afar; it’s the one you wake up with and decide to run with.”
Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Lanre Amodu called the partnership a milestone in strategic collaboration and innovation, reflecting Covenant University’s commitment to global impact.
The event also featured scholarships and awards for students. Ayomide Ogunmola, a 100-level student, received a N10m scholarship covering full tuition from 100 to 500 level, while 500-level student David Ibiyemi was awarded N2.2m. Four other students received ambassadorial awards.
