Nigerian Afrobeats icon, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has once again shown that fame and compassion can go hand in hand as he commissioned a female hostel named after his late mother, Dr. Veronica Adeleke, at Clifford University, Abia State.
The emotional ceremony, which took place during the university’s 6th Convocation Ceremony on Sunday, was more than an academic milestone — it became a touching celebration of love, legacy, and learning.
The newly inaugurated Dr. Veronica Adeleke Female Hostel stands as a lasting tribute to a woman remembered for her passion for education and philanthropy. It symbolizes empowerment and the continuation of her life’s mission through her son’s achievements.
Davido, who attended the event as a special guest and keynote speaker, spoke with visible emotion as he reflected on his mother’s influence on his journey.
“True greatness is not about fame or numbers,” he told the graduating students, “but about the lives you touch and the change you inspire.”
He added:
“My mother believed that education and compassion could change lives. This building continues her purpose — turning love into legacy.”
In a heartfelt post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Davido expressed gratitude for the honor, noting that the moment reminded him of his mother’s deep dedication to education and community development.
“From taking acting seriously to becoming a subject of study… What started as passion and discipline has become a movement. I feel honored and motivated to keep giving my best,” he wrote.
The ceremony stirred deep emotions among attendees, as Davido’s humility and sincerity resonated strongly with students and guests alike. For many, the day went beyond a celebrity appearance — it became a reminder that fame can be used as a force for good.
Adding to the day’s goodwill, Cubana Chief Priest, a close friend of Davido, surprised the audience by pledging to sponsor the tuition of 50 Clifford University students, a gesture that drew thunderous applause and admiration.
Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Chimezie Omeonu, commended Davido’s commitment to education and philanthropy, describing the occasion as “a noble act that inspires hope.” He also praised the late Dr. Veronica Adeleke as “a woman whose belief in empowering young women through knowledge will continue to live on through this hostel.”
The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by dignitaries, university officials, students, and guests.
