ADDIS ABABA – In a strategic move to close educational gaps and drive inclusive national development, the Ethiopian government has launched a nationwide Early Childhood Development and Education Policy Campaign.
Announced by State Minister of Education Ayelech Eshete, the initiative seeks to embed early childhood education within national policy frameworks, teacher training systems, and local development efforts. Ayelech described early learning as a cornerstone of the country’s economic and social future.
“Early childhood education is not just about learning. It is about building the economy and the nation’s future,” she remarked at the campaign’s launch event.
The campaign promotes greater access to early learning opportunities by integrating education initiatives with grassroots mobilisation, especially for underserved and rural areas. The minister also emphasised the vital role communities must play, particularly in constructing schools and improving access to foundational learning.
Women and Social Affairs Minister Ergoge Tesfaye (PhD) echoed the campaign’s urgency, calling for targeted interventions to ensure equitable access, especially for children in rural and marginalised regions.
“This policy campaign has already shown impact—50 percent of children are now enrolled in early education programmes, a remarkable achievement over the last two years,” she noted.
The campaign aligns with Ethiopia’s broader vision of using early childhood development as a tool for poverty alleviation, inclusive economic growth, and the creation of a cohesive national identity. As part of this effort, more than 500 daycare centres have been established across various states.
However, significant challenges remain. These include infrastructural limitations, teacher shortages, limited financial resources, and difficult terrain in rural areas. Minister Ergoge stressed the importance of collaborative research and problem-solving to address these issues and ensure effective, long-term implementation.
The nationwide campaign represents a crucial investment in Ethiopia’s future, aiming to provide every child—regardless of background or location—with a solid educational foundation.
