University students across Ethiopia say the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Programme is strengthening their digital skills and preparing them to participate more effectively in the country’s emerging digital economy.
Launched in July 2024 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the initiative aims to train five million young Ethiopians in essential digital and coding skills through an online learning platform. The programme is a joint effort between the governments of Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates, aligned with Ethiopia’s broader vision of building a digitally skilled workforce.
Focus on Core Technology Skills
The programme offers training in key areas such as Android application development, web programming, data analysis, and artificial intelligence, providing learners with foundational competencies needed in today’s technology-driven environment.
Students from Addis Ababa University and Kotebe University of Education who participated in the training described it as practical, accessible, and relevant to both academic work and future employment.
Students Highlight Impact and Accessibility
Arsema Mengistu, an Information Systems student at Addis Ababa University, said the free training has opened up opportunities to acquire digital skills that would otherwise be difficult to access.
She noted that the programme plays an important role in accelerating digital transformation by encouraging widespread participation, particularly among young people.
Another student, Tsion Mesganaw, said the initiative was designed to be inclusive, allowing learners from diverse backgrounds to build digital competence regardless of prior experience.
Bethlehem Solomon added that the training modules are structured in a user-friendly manner, making complex technology concepts easier to understand.
Flexible Learning Model
Students at Kotebe University of Education also praised the programme’s flexibility. Geleta Kafo, a Sports Science student, said the online format allows learners to access lessons using either mobile phones or computers, making it convenient for students with varying schedules.
Similarly, Diqaba Gonji, a student of Education Leadership and Administration, encouraged fellow students to take advantage of the programme to strengthen their digital skills alongside formal studies.

Education and technology stakeholders say initiatives such as the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Programme are critical to building the human capital required for Digital Ethiopia, a national agenda aimed at expanding digital inclusion and participation in the global digital economy.
