The Federal Government has approved a policy empowering all Federal Colleges of Education (FCOEs) to award both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor’s Degrees in Education, under the newly enacted Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023, signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, in Abuja, the policy aims to enhance teacher quality and widen access to higher education. Colleges that meet the standards set by the National Universities Commission (NUC) can now independently run degree programs without requiring university affiliations.
“This move helps us build a stronger education system. No country can rise above the quality of its teachers,” said Dr. Alausa.
The new framework allows colleges to develop their own curricula tailored to modern teaching demands, while also increasing student enrollment and institutional relevance.
The initiative is part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to reform and strengthen Nigeria’s education sector, ensuring well-trained, degree-holding educators at all levels.
