The Federal Government has commenced the nationwide rollout of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Teacher Capacity Development Programme across Federal Unity Colleges, in a move aimed at equipping about 11,700 teachers with digital skills for 21st-century teaching and learning.
The initiative, being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education through its Education Support Services Department in partnership with ICEDT Consult Limited, follows the successful completion of a pilot phase in six Federal Unity Colleges representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
According to the Ministry, the programme is designed to strengthen teachers’ digital competencies, improve lesson planning, enhance classroom instruction and promote the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in education.
Speaking during the signing of the Terms of Reference in Abuja, the Director of Education Support Services, Mr Gabriel O. Amudipe, described the initiative as a strategic investment in teacher professionalism and the future of Nigeria’s education sector.
He urged all stakeholders to uphold high implementation standards while ensuring effective monitoring and quality assurance throughout the nationwide rollout.
The Ministry said the programme is expected to benefit approximately 11,700 teachers, enabling them to improve classroom practice, enhance learning outcomes and better prepare students with the digital knowledge and skills required in the 21st-century economy.
It added that the nationwide expansion forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s education system through technology-driven teaching and learning.
