The Chief Executive Officer of Bodex Group International, Florence Hungbo, has stressed the importance of furthering education, saying it strengthens leadership capacity and management skills.
Hungbo said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
She spoke shortly after graduating at the 56th combined Convocation Ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, held on Thursday, January 22.
According to Hungbo, further education goes beyond acquiring certificates, as it deepens knowledge, builds character, and improves decision-making.
“Education goes beyond certificates; it builds depth. The more you read, the more passion you gain. Reading teaches patience, focus, leadership, and human management,” she said.
A globally recognised media entrepreneur and strategic communications expert, Hungbo described the convocation ceremony as a culmination of a journey marked by resilience, reinvention, and a strong passion for growth.
She noted that the academic experience had reshaped her leadership approach and strengthened her understanding of learning and capacity building.
In an influence-driven digital age, Hungbo said education was critical to managing information responsibly, combating misinformation, and avoiding the spread of fake news.
“You cannot just talk out of point. You must know what you are saying. Education helps you understand alignment and manage misinformation,” she said.
Hungbo, who earned her first degree in Industrial Chemistry, said her decision to study Mass Communication was deliberate, as it aligns with her current professional practice in media and strategic communication.
“Having a second degree that aligns with what I do today is intentional. I want my education to reflect my practice,” she said.
She admitted that balancing academic commitments with running multiple businesses was challenging, with time management posing the greatest difficulty.
“Sometimes, attending lectures while managing businesses was not easy, but discipline and passion helped me through,” she said.
Reflecting on her career, which spans broadcasting, media consulting, reputation management, and entrepreneurship, Hungbo said returning to school was driven by self-awareness and long-term vision.
Beyond personal achievement, she said she remained committed to impact, citing initiatives such as engaging over 1,200 UNILAG students through the Bodex Social Media Hangout.
She added that plans were underway for a nationwide digital media school tour aimed at building media and digital skills from the grassroots.
According to her, the initiative would involve journalists, media owners, and digital influencers mentoring students across the country. (NAN)
