The Federal University Dutse has secured N53 million in TETFund research grants to support two projects targeting banditry in Northern Nigeria and mosquito control across the country.
The grants, awarded through the TETFund National Research Fund, will fund two research projects led by professors of the university.
N25m project targets banditry
Professor Ado Jangargari will lead a N25 million project titled “Tech for Peace: Engaging Northern Pastoralists in Non-Agricultural Livelihoods to Counter Banditry and Kidnapping.”
The research will explore how technology and alternative livelihood opportunities can be used to engage Northern pastoralist communities as part of efforts to address insecurity.
N28m project focuses on mosquitoes
The second project, led by Professor Joshua Balogun, received N28 million.
It is titled “Development of Indoor Carbon Dioxide Sequestration Machine (iCor-SeMa) for Diversionary Control of Mosquitoes in Nigeria.”
The project will focus on developing a technology aimed at controlling mosquitoes indoors.
Both projects have two-year timelines
The two projects are expected to run for 24 months, with the researchers tasked with producing results capable of making a practical impact in communities.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Ahmad Gumel congratulated the researchers and urged them to adhere to the project timelines while ensuring quality delivery.
The university also said it would closely monitor the projects to ensure they meet TETFund’s objectives.
Gumel expressed optimism that the university would attract more research grants as academic staff become increasingly aware of opportunities available through the TETFund National Research Fund and other funding bodies.
The university said it remains committed to supporting research aimed at addressing national challenges, with the expectation that the outcomes of the two projects will benefit Jigawa State and Nigeria as a whole.
