Job Description
To execute instrumentation, control systems, automation and electrical engineering activities for new facilities, existing facilities modifications and operational support, for the Engineering and Operations departments, to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient hydrocarbon processing that safeguards personnel and optimizes asset performance and profitability.
Key Responsibilities Areas (KRAs) & Initiatives
Instrument and Control Engineering Design and Specification
- Develop, and verify detailed specifications and datasheets for all field instruments (transmitters, flowmeters, analysers, control valves) and control systems (DCS, PLC, SIS) using industry codes (e.g., International Society of Automation (ISA), American Petroleum Institute (API)) to ensure accurate procurement, reliable performance, and safe operation of assets.
- Develop, and review, the application of I&C documentation, including P&IDs, instrument index, loop diagrams, cause & effect matrices, and control philosophies using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and specialized software to ensure design accuracy and seamless integration with other engineering disciplines that minimizes rework during construction.
- Evaluate vendor proposals during procurement activities by assessing compliance with specifications, managing technical clarification queries, and ensuring equipment suitability to guarantee that all purchased control equipment is fit-for-purpose, reliable, and complies with safety and design standards.
- Conduct engineering studies and feasibility assessments for proposed facility automation upgrades by evaluating technology options, estimating costs, and defining project scopes to provide sound recommendations that support robust project planning and effective capital allocation decisions.
- Carry out quality reviews of I&C engineering documents in line with internal QA processes to minimize errors, uphold design integrity, and support safe and reliable execution.
Electrical Design and Engineering Excellence
- Develop and verify electrical equipment specifications and datasheets—covering generators, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, and cabling—while also preparing and reviewing engineering documents such as SLDs, hazardous area classifications, control schematics, and layouts using CAD tools, ensuring compliance with industry codes (IEEE, IEC, API, NFPA 70/NEC), design accuracy, and effective multidisciplinary coordination to support safe and reliable project execution.
- Conduct engineering studies and power system analysis (load flow, short circuit, arc flash, protective relay coordination) using specialized software (e.g., ETAP) to ensure system stability, safety, and compliance with all operational demands.
- Develop, implement, and monitor electrical integrity programs for power distribution systems and critical equipment by coordinating preventative maintenance strategies and overseeing regular inspections to ensure the long-term health, safety, and reliability of all electrical infrastructure.
- Provide electrical engineering support for daily plant operations by troubleshooting power system issues, identifying performance gaps in motors and distribution equipment, and delivering timely technical solutions that minimize unplanned downtime, restore production efficiently, and maintain high facility reliability.
Process Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Compliance
- Support the compliance of safety instrumented system (SIS) designs with relevant safety regulations and international standards (IEC 61508/61511, API) by applying SIL verification calculations and procedures to help ensure reliable safety functionality and reduce operational risk.
- Develop and update cause & effect matrices and safety logic diagrams by working closely with process and operations teams to accurately reflect all safety shutdown scenarios and maintain compliance with process safety management (PSM) requirements.
- Participate in formal hazard analysis reviews—such as HAZOP, LOPA, and PSSR—by providing electrical engineering input on control system behaviour, equipment failure modes, and protective safeguards to help ensure that potential risks are properly identified, evaluated, and addressed in the design
- Support the engineering and validation of critical safety equipment by performing inspection activities, reviewing test procedures, and applying applicable electrical and I&C safety regulations to help prevent equipment failures and ensure personnel and environmental protection.
- Support regulatory and third‑party inspection activities by preparing required technical documentation, coordinating statutory inspection schedules, and addressing electrical/I&C technical queries to ensure systems comply with mandatory government and environmental regulations and obtain timely approvals.
Operational Support and Optimization
- Provide electrical and I&C engineering support for daily plant operations by troubleshooting complex control system issues, identifying performance gaps in control loops, and delivering timely technical solutions that reduce unplanned downtime, restore production efficiently, and maintain high facility reliability.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of Advanced Process Control (APC) and optimization strategies by applying data analytics and control loop tuning techniques to enhance facility efficiency, improve energy performance, and increase throughput while maintaining safe operating conditions.
- Review maintenance procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for electrical and I&C equipment by verifying technical accuracy and assessing safety implications to help prevent human error, reduce operational risks, and ensure the safe operation of control systems.
- Manage the technical aspects of all Turnaround (TAR) and major maintenance activities related to instrumentation by defining scope, coordinating calibration plans, and ensuring quality control (QC) inspections are executed properly to ensure efficient and safe return-to-service of equipment.
- Develop and apply engineering solutions for digitalization and data integration by specifying IIoT sensors and linking operational data to centralized platforms to support predictive maintenance and enable data‑driven decision‑making.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
Required Professional Certifications / Accreditations / Registrations
- Registered/Chartered Engineer status with a recognized professional body (e.g., COREN in Nigeria, or equivalent international professional engineering license).
Minimum Years of Experience and Relevant Areas
- Minimum of 5 years of instrumentation and control systems engineering experience in the oil and gas, refining, or petrochemical industry.
