The Kwara State University, Malete, has appealed to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to build a flyover along the Shao–Malete Road to curb the frequent accidents that put students and other road users at risk.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jimoh Shaykh-Lukman, made the appeal on Tuesday during the university’s pre-convocation press briefing.
He praised the governor for quickly repairing the Malete road, saying it has eased movement, but noted that the Federal Government’s intervention on the expressway has not solved the constant danger.
According to him, many commercial and articulated vehicles often drive against traffic just to shorten their route, putting lives in danger.
“This is a major hazard for everyone. We plead with our visitor, Governor AbdulRazaq, to help us with a flyover for safe crossing,” he said.
The VC also called for an extension of the intra-campus road network, saying the university cannot handle such major infrastructure on its own.
On the upcoming 13th convocation scheduled for December 13, he announced that 8,119 graduates will receive their degrees. Out of these, 7,618 are first-degree holders and 501 are postgraduate graduands.
The breakdown includes 82 First Class, 1,986 Second Class Upper, 4,195 Second Class Lower, and 1,355 Third Class graduates.
At the postgraduate level, 75 PhDs and 426 Master’s degrees will be awarded.
Prof. Shaykh-Lukman also highlighted the progress the university has made, noting that the Osi and Ilesha-Baruba campuses are now fully active, with staff and students already integrated into their host communities.
He said the expansion continues to bring academic and socio-economic benefits to the state as the institution now runs 81 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across its three campuses.
